Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Harry Vassallo said the provision of a shuttle bus service to and from the airport to Cirkewwa, and preferably to the terminal in Mgarr and ending in Victoria, should be one of the government's foremost priorities.

Dr Vassallo said that if the government really believes that Gozo should be marketed as a distinct tourist destination, a direct catamaran service from Gozo to Sicily should be explored.

At a press conference in Cirkewwa, AD Gozo Regional Committee member Victor Galea noted that it is ironic that the helicopter service came to an end on the same day that Ryanair commenced its flights to and from Malta.

He said AD hopes that incentives given to low-cost airlines are extended to companies wishing to operate a helicopter service to and from Gozo. Any new service must include an onward check-in facility. The lack of this seriously disadvantaged Helisureste, Mr Galea said.

He also said that a catamaran connection between the Grand Harbour and Mgarr would greatly facilitate both commuters and cruise liner passengers who want to experience Gozo.

And for daily commuters from Gozo, it would be feasible to reintroduce an Mgarr/Sa Maison hydrofoil service or the catamaran, at least in the mornings and evenings.
