The Department of Biology in collaboration with the Environment Protection Directorate of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority are organising a Biology Symposium on Saturday from 9 a.m. in John Borg Hall (formerly Science Lecture Theatre).
Minister of Rural Affairs George Pullicino will open the symposium during which new information will be presented on a number of topical environmental and other issues.
The themes to be discussed include: Bathing water quality and good beach management; The genetic viability of local populations of bats, hermit crabs and other species; New data on local sites of ecological importance, such as the Salini saline marshlands, the sand dunes at Ramla tat-Torri, Wied Hoxt and Wied iz-Zurrieq; Village feasts and the environment; Ecology of sandy and other beaches; New information on tuna penning; Risks to local potato crops; and First results on the quality of Maltese honey.
This has now become an established annual event, which is eagerly looked forward to by all those interested in the dynamic science of Biology. During the symposium the current graduates of the department are given the opportunity to make brief presentations of the work they carried out in connection with their final year electives or dissertations.
