Yelp for help, a non-profit voluntary organisation, was set up in September 2004 to organise events to raise funds for the neutering of stray cats and dogs.
Yelp's events also aim to build awareness on stray population management, homing homeless animals and pet care.
Yelp for Help is one of three local fund-raising organisations geared to support animal welfare. All three organisations work closely together and have managed to relieve, if ever so slightly, the pressure that animal sanctuaries and stray colony carers face every day. The costs of neutering, feeding, surgery, inoculations and medication are enormous and require ongoing support.
Yelp for Help organises one large fund-raising event every year. Local sanctuaries and carers are invited to participate to promote their own organisations and campaigns. Participating animal welfare organisations are encouraged to raise funds throughout the event.
A total of Lm6,000 was raised through the two events held so far. The money was used to support carers and sanctuaries with their neutering programmes and medical expenses. Sanctuaries supported financially to date are the Abandoned Animals Association, Animal Rights Group, Island Sanctuary, Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary, SPCA Gozo and Support for Abandoned Animals
Neutering vouchers were issued to several cat and dog colony carers. A total of 360 stray cats and 87 stray dogs were neutered to date through Yelp for Help's neutering programme
Yelp for Help has also set up a re-homing online service in collaboration with di-ve.com (http://classifieds.di-ve.com/classifieds), launched a volunteer recruitment scheme called PALS (People for Animal Loving Societies) and formed an animal welfare sub committee of the Sliema Local Council. Through this initiative Yelp For Help strives to support SPCA's project of transforming cat colonies into attractive Cat Cafes.
Next Sunday the FuRRRballs Festival will be held at Buskett Gardens (see insert distributed with this issue of The Sunday Times).
