A 21-year-old woman from Gozo was given a 12-month jail term suspended for three years yesterday after pleading guilty to having married a Libyan man in order for him to gain Maltese citizenship.

The Xlendi woman was found guilty of having consciously entered a marriage of convenience in January 2005.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli considered the fact that the accused reported the matter herself when handing down judgment.

He also took into account her young age and her clean police record.
