On Saturday the Winter Cricket League commenced with a competitive opening game between Krishna and Overseas.

Overseas won the toss and elected to field. Sasha Stevenson, a new face for Krishna, opened the batting with Nowell Khosla. The batting pair were doing extremely well; they had 36 runs of the first three overs of the innings. In the fourth over all was changed, starting with a bizarre run out of Khosla who had already made 17 runs.

There were calls of 'yes' (for taking a run) after two bad throws from fielders but his partner said 'no' and Khosla was run out. In the same over, up-and-coming bowler Sunny Krishna then bowled Stevenson (10 runs) and repeated the performance on incoming batsman Mark Sacco.

Sam Dhandapani and Jeya Krishna built a partnership of 126 runs. Dhandapani was bowled for 37 and Jeya Krishna was lbw to young player Mike Jones for 54 runs which had included five fours.

Raj chipped in with 10 runs before being bowled. Kevin Krishna was left stranded with three runs not out with four overs left. Krishna, who totaled 207 runs, also boasted a significant 76 runs from extras. The extras which were bowled by the Overseas bowlers were the cause for their loss.

For Overseas, Sunny Krishna and Stuart Thompson, also a new face to Overseas, both took two wickets each.

Overseas opening batsmen Thomas Jones and Mike Smith were also cruising along until Jones was caught behind for 18 runs when the score was at 50 runs of five overs.

Jonathan Tully was the next batsman who smashed 18 runs of 11 balls, who also hit the only six of the game. Thompson batted well for 24 runs and Sunny Krishna only managed two runs.

Mike Smith batted through the full 20 overs and remained not out on 96 runs. He missed out on a century and lost the chance to win the game for his team.

Overseas only managed 187 runs, 20 runs short. For Krishna Sam Dhandapani was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets.

This win takes Krishna on top of the ladder with nine points while Overseas managed four points while Marsa are yet to play.

Next Saturday, after the nursery/academy, Marsa take on Overseas.
