The Malta Business Bureau (representing the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI), the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, and the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise), in collaboration with Bank of Valletta plc, recently organised a seminar on efficiency in energy and water consumption.

It was focused on practical insights into how energy and water savings can be achieved at firm-level within the commerce and manufacturing sectors, large corporate business such as banks and audit firms, as well as the hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants and catering establishments.

Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit opened the seminar. Then Ing. George Cassar from the Malta Resources Authority delivered a presentation on 'An Integrated National Energy Efficiency Plan'

This was followed by a panel discussion during which senior representatives from the key players in the area fielded several questions from the seminar participants.

The panel included Ing. Phyllis Borg from the MRA; Ing. Anthony Rizzo, Enemalta CEO; Ing. Mark Muscat, Water Services Corporation CEO; and Marie Louise Mangion, director EU Affairs and Policy Development at the Ministry for Tourism and Culture.

The panel discussion was chaired by Godwin C. Micallef, FOI council member and leader of the FOI Environment Working Group.

The panel discussion was followed by three interesting case studies: from the manufacturing industry by Ing. Alessio Gatt from Trelleborg Ltd; from the hotels and catering sector by Ing. Ray Vassallo from Radisson SAS Golden Sands; and on energy saving at the new BOV Head Office by Arch. Henri Portelli.

Other presentations were made by Omar Cutajar from MBB on 'Policy considerations and EU funding opportunities for Business' and Reuben Saliba from BoV on 'BoV's Environment Micro-financing package'. Charles Borg, executive head at the BoV CEO's Office, made the concluding address. Dr Simone Borg chaired the seminar.
