Alternattiva Demokratika has called on the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to enforce operating conditions in a quarry at Tal-Modorbu, used for dumping of construction waste.

Environment spokesperson Mark Causon said permit conditions for the quarry state that the quarry was to be restored to the original landforms of the area. Instead the mounds of rubble and soil are piled high.

The growing waste mountain is visible from as far away as the public garden in Zurrieq. Uncovered trucks servicing the quarry disperse dust in the surrounding area which includes farmed land.

Permit application PA 4150/03 was filed under the name of Charles Polidano for a site labelled "Eco-radam".

Operations at the quarry are breaching environmental conditions for waste management specified in the permit, which state that the ecological characteristics of the area were to have been restored, AD said.
