As one of the stakeholders in the EQUAL project that is led by the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality 'Promoting Equal Opportunities through Empowerment' the Malta Federation of Industry conducted a survey among its members last month targeted at identifying the skills and competences sought after by local industry.
The FOI decided to play an active role in this project as most of its members are potential employers of the inactive segment of the Maltese population and consequently the project's target group.
The aims and objectives of the FOI focus on the promotion and development of industry. Consequently, it follows that by identifying the needs of industry the federation is not only contributing to the project but also promoting the interests of local industry; hence, the added value for both FOI and the country as a whole.
The presentation of the findings of the FOI questionnaire may be accessed on Website: www.equality.gov.mt. For more information contact the FOI secretariat on 2123-4428 or 2122-2074.
... and environment twinning project
The FOI has appointed Godwin C. Micallef, leader of its Environment Working Group, to represent it on a technical working group that has been set up as part of a Twinning Project between Malta and Austria.
The project is the outcome of a twinning agreement reached by Malta's Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment and the Federal Environment Agency of Austria as part of the 2005 National Transition Facility Programme for Malta.
The project is targeting two main areas: waste-to-energy technologies, and the management of construction and demolition waste. Angelo Xuereb, president of the Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, an associate member of the FOI, is participating in the task force regarding construction and demolition waste; Mary Gaerty, deputy leader of the FOI Environment Working Group, is participating in the workshops on waste-to-energy technologies.
The project is being run by Hans-Joerg Zerz, the resident twinning adviser.
