Jonny Wilkinson's appalling injury woes continued this week when he was ruled out for at least a month with kidney damage.
England's World Cup-winning flyhalf sustained the injury playing for Newcastle during last Friday's 26-21 Premiership win over Bristol, a match in which he played the full 80 minutes.
Newcastle issued a statement on Wednesday saying that Wilkinson complained of pain in the area, with medical examinations showing damage to the kidney.
No operation is required but Wilkinson has been advised to rest for a month before resuming any form of training.
Wilkinson has not played for England since kicking the last-minute drop goal that won the 2003 World Cup final. He has suffered a long and varied series of injuries, including a shoulder nerve problem, bicep, appendicitis, groin and, earlier this season, knee ligaments.
