The Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday approved an application for a civic amenity site - a bulky refuse depot - approximately one kilometre from both Xewkija and Ghajnsielem in Gozo.

Mepa said the site is situated in a low-lying area located in an existing disused quarry.

The approved site, run by Wasteserv, provides for professional supervised facilities where members of the public can bring and discard a variety of household bulky waste. It will provide a waste collection service in Gozo, prior to the discarded items being sent to Malta for recycling.

Unlike bring-in sites, whereby only paper, plastic, metal and glass can be delivered, this and similar sites cater for separate disposal of waste such as tyres, refrigerators, electronic products, waste from DIY activities and garden waste.

Mepa yesterday also approved minor changes to the terminal and port area at Cirkewwa.

The changes include the re-routing of traffic at the terminal area and the marshalling at the car park.
