Malavika Sarukkai, one of the foremost dancers in India, will be performing Bharata Nãtyam - the Indian Classical Dance from South India-Tamil Nadu - on November 17 and 19 at the Sacred Heart Theatre, St Julians at 9 p.m.
Malavika, who will perform with six musicians, is acclaimed in her own country and internationally for her contemporary Bharata Nãtyam dance style.
One of the oldest classical dances of India, Bharata Nãtyam is a rich and intense style that combines dynamism and grace, austerity and passion, energy and repose. It is a style that is aesthetic and accessible and constantly evolving.
Malavika's exceptional artistry was featured in the BBC/WNET television documentary Dancing, a nine-hour series on world dance. A film called Samarpanam has been specially made by the government of India on her life and work.
Rene Sirvin from Le Figaro, Paris, stated that "each performance of Malavika Sarukkai is an event... She is without any doubt the most expressive of contemporary Indian dancers... One admires the brilliance and the elegance of the artist... the perfection of her technique... the liveliness and variety of her dance, which lies somewhere between ecstasy and sensuality, always of an exquisite femininity."
Tickets at Lm3 for students/children and Lm5 for adults are available from St James Cavalier Centre for Creativty box office, on boxoffice@sjcav.org or 2122 3200.
