The St Paul's Missionary College, Rabat, will hold its third APS Bank Under-16 Chess Open next Saturday at the College's Library, starting at 8.30 a.m.

The first two editions of the SPMC Chess Open were won by Mark Cardona, then Malta junior champion. Cardona has now moved on to a higher category, leaving the stage clear for a new candidate to arise from the rank and file of aspiring chess players.

Foremost among them must be Leonard Farrugia, the current Malta junior champion and a former student of SPMC. Rita Saliba, the highest-ranked female participant in last September's APS Bank National Junior Championships, is favourite to retain the ladies' title.

The tournament is open to anyone born after January 1, 1990 and there will be prizes for the first three finishers as well as the top-placed players in the U-14, U-12 and U-10 (boys and girls).

Colin Pace, the 2006 national champion and an old boy of SPMC, will be in charge of the pairings. Further information may be obtained by calling 2145-9536 or by sending an e-mail to emmanuel@spmc.edu.mt.
