Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech yesterday presented Lm25,000 to the Mellieha Sports Complex from the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.

The complex will house a gym and synthetic football pitches, along with changing rooms, administration offices and parking facilities.

Over 250 children will benefit from the complex, which will house various sports, including baseball, basketball, football and netball.

Mr Fenech said that the contribution to the Mellieha Sports Complex highlighted Government's commitment to sports organisations and sporting activities.

The National Lotteries Good Causes Fund aimed to help various organisations with a philanthropic background, he added. The fund generates its income through a percentage of the tax raised from lotteries and games, and unclaimed prizes.

The fund has already distributed over Lm250,000 this year to sports associations and clubs.

Some of the beneficiaries that have received contributions were the Malta Sports Council, the Malta Olympic Committee, the Malta Football Association, the Malta Basketball Association, and local clubs including the Birkirkara Tennis Club, Oratory Youths, and the Luxol and Floriana Youth Nurseries.

Other applications are currently being reviewed, some of which include the part-financing of new synthetic pitches at St Patrick's FC and structural work at the Gozo FA stadium.
