Getting people on the buses

According to the latest figures, fewer people are using public transport. I would like to make a couple of suggestions on attracting more passengers and thereby reducing congestion on the roads.

A system of reduced tariffs at certain times of day, a sort of "happy hours" period, could be introduced. The full fare would be paid to Valletta but the return journey would be free, effectively giving a 50 per cent discount to commuters.

Another incentive would be for commercial establishments in Valletta, in agreement with the transport authorities, to offer free day/week public transport tickets on purchases of a certain amount from their establishments.

A sum of money has been voted for the revamping and refurbishing of the main bus terminus in Valletta. It is high time that some kind of a rest room and shelter is provided for the bus drivers who work such long hours. The terminus should include an information office, lecture/video room with updates about public relations relating to transport, decent public toilets and amenities, and a dining area where workers can have their meals and a rest instead of using the bus seats. The premises should also include individual lockers for each bus driver.

Such amenities will take a lot of the pressure off the bus drivers and reduce the frustration of driving on our roads for such long hours.
