The Malta Transport Authority has written to The Times to clarify a point made by Victor Spiteri about pricing of the new route between the Valletta Waterfront and Valletta City Gate. The ADT said that the fare is of 40c for a return trip and not of €1 because the euro will only become legal tender on January 1, 2008.

The ADT should clearly note that the equivalent in euros of 40c is not €1 but €0.9322 and that was the horrendous part of Mr Spiteri's statement. Rounding off is already taking place, publicly and in broad daylight, to the detriment of the consumer. Where are the government statements now of the determination to prevent this phenomenon that has hiked the cost of living in so many other countries, with the introduction of the euro, from happening here? Where is the euro changeover committee? Already asleep? Dual pricing my foot!
