The most prestigious table football team competition of the season, the European Champions League, was played last weekend in Lisbon, Portugal.

In all, there were 28 participating teams from ten countries, namely Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Greece, England, Holland and Germany.

Four Maltese players also figured in this competition. Massimo Cremona, the world's no.1 ranked player, turned out for holders Perugia, Hansel Mallia for Belgium's Hennuyer while Joseph Mifsud and Mark Gauci played for Greek side Altas Glyfada.

Cremona was instrumental in helping his side reach the final, winning all his matches. However, Perugia missed out on the title after losing narrowly to Napoli 1-2.

For Cremona, this was his second appearance in the Champions League final after being part of the losing Reggiana side last year in Murcia.

Napoli were the dominant team in the tournament. In 40 singular games, only Cremona blemished what would have been a perfect record. The Maltese was the only player to score a win against them.

Mallia's Hennuyer were eliminated in the semi-finals by Napoli 0-2. They somewhat made up for that upset by winning the third place play-off 3-0 against Charleroi, also of Belgium.

Altas Glyfada were knocked out in the last 16 stage.
