A committee has been formed consisting of government officials, the EU German presidency (which takes office in January) and the European Commission Representation to prepare a series of activities to be held in Malta next year to commemorate the EU's 50th birthday.
A draft programme of activities, mainly in the cultural and educational fields, has already been prepared and the necessary decisions on the final programme will be taken shortly.
The European Commission in Brussels on Wednesday unveiled several projects and events to be held throughout the EU next year to celebrate the golden anniversary of the signature of the Rome treaties.
The programme includes various projects such as the United Schools Of Europe which will link schools from all parts of the EU with each other. Schoolchildren will talk to each other and exchange views and experiences using real-time web based communication tools.
A Youth Summit in Rome will be held parallel with the meeting between heads of state and government in Berlin on March 24-25. Youth representatives from all over Europe will discuss their future, first with each other then with the European Council in Berlin, through a live image transmission.
Concerts for Europe will be organised by the representations in the member states on Europe Day celebrated on May 9.
Commenting of the events programme, Commission Vice President Margot Wallstrom said the EU will be using this anniversary to show that the Union is not just another market place but is also about solidarity, citizenship, gender equality, consumer rights and opportunities for people.
The Commission is expected to issue the full programme of its events later on this year.
