Launched in the autumn of 1998, the Audi TT, a cult and an icon car, took the sports coupé segment by storm and sharpened the brand profile. This was stated by Maurice Mizzi, chairman of Continental Cars, at the launch of the second generation model range last Tuesday. The new Audi TT coupé is more dynamic in terms of design, drive-train and its running gear.

"The very architecture of the new Audi TT coupé embodies the style, stability and power of a pure driving machine," Mr Mizzi said. "The Audi design team has lovingly adopted and enhanced the visual code of the predecessor model - the motif of circles and domes."

The new TT appears more stretched; even when at a standstill it looks to be striving to move forward. It is 137 mm longer at 4,178 mm and 78 mm wider at 1,842 mm than the previous model.

For the first time it's body is constructed of aluminium and steel. Sixty-nine per cent of the super structure is made of aluminium. The other 31 per cent of remaining steel is to be found at the rear end so as to ensure balanced distribution of the axle loads. To improve downforce, a spoiler is extended from the tailgate when the car reaches 120 km/h.

The 2+2 seater coupé comes with two powerful petrol engines. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI unit featuring FSI direct injection, which develops 200 bhp through a six-speed manual gearbox, accelerates the TT to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 240 km/h.

The other 3.2-litre V6 engine develops 250 bhp, accelerating to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. Both engines can be combined with the dynamic S Tronic dual-clutch gearbox.

The newly developed Audi dynamic suspension, tuned for the Audi TT, gives you that sporty orientation, which produces more driving fun, agility and supreme handling characteristics. The new multi-link rear suspension ensures optimum driving dynamics at a spots car level.

Standard features include 17 inch alloy wheels, climate control air-conditioning, power steering, leather sports seats, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, alarm, engine immobiliser, six-air bags, radio CD player, on board computer and a state-of-the-art electronic stability programme featuring ABS, EBD, ASR and EDL. The all-new TT also comes with a two-year warranty on mechanicals, three years on paintworks and 12 years on body structure.

The Audi TT is on display at the Continental Cars showroom in Mosta Road, Lija.
