Energy efficiency can be a key driver for enhancing the competitive edge of commerce, industry and the hospitality sector especially in the light of the spiralling energy costs, Charles Borg, executive head at the CEO's office at Bank of Valletta said.

"Bank of Valletta has taken the environmental issue very seriously and this commitment is very well reflected in the building of the BOV centre in Sta Venera, premises that feature a number of important energy-saving practices," he added.

The BOV centre, which brings together over 25 per cent of the BOV staff and some 25 separate and distinct operations, underlines the bank's determination to make a positive contribution towards the environment in general by placing energy efficiency very high on its agenda.

The project is just one example that shows, in a practical way, how the environmental agenda features highly on the bank's list of priorities, Mr Borg added.

He was addressing a seminar entitled Let's Save On Our Energy Costs: Energy And Water Savings For Business, at the Westin Dragonara on Wednesday. The seminar, attended by over 130 delegates representing a wide cross section of economic sectors, helped to update participants on the government's plans to implement an integrated national energy efficiency plan.

Mr Borg also spoke on BOV's initiatives and projects in this sector mentioning, among others, afforestation and the general embellishment of public areas through the planting of trees and general upkeep.

Among the most important initiatives supported by the bank are the project for the revival of Maltese olives, popularly known as Primo, and the BOV Ta' Qali environment project that involves the general embellishment of the Ta' Qali picnic area.

Mr Borg referred to this year's launch of the BOV eco personal loan scheme, a product designed to assist customers to finance purchases of eco-friendly equipment and products, and to the launch of an environment package for industry with financing of up to Lm50,000 for investment in energy savings or renewable energy sources.
