Kevin Mercieca has just won the first ranking tournament of the season after beating Clint Grima 8-7 in an exciting final at the Pandora Hall, Zejtun.

No fewer than 142 players took part in this first ranking tournament from a series organised by the Malta Pool Association.

Mercieca is now leading the rankings followed by Grima. In the semi-finals, Mercieca and Grima had the better of Stephen Mangion and Mario Brincat with the identical score of 7-6.

Shawn Agius secured the first victory of the first U-18 tournament. In the final he won comfortably against Malcolm Azzo-pardi 6-2.

In the semi-finals, Agius beat Jesmond Gafa 5-2 while Azzopardi outclassed Joseph Casha 5-1.

The second ranking tournament of the season gets underway on October 30. In 2006/07, the association will be holding three ranking tournaments in all and two other qualifying competitions that will guarantee places in the national teams.
