Rangers rescued their flickering Scottish title hopes with a late winner from substitute Nacho Novo to claim a 3-2 victory at St Mirren yesterday.

After stumbling to victory and third place they trail champions Celtic by 10 points after 11 matches.

Striker John Sutton headed St Mirren in front after six minutes but Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam lashed in the equaliser on 18 minutes.

Belgian Thomas Buffel put Rangers 2-1 up after 26 minutes. But the Saints looked to have taken a point when Sutton converted a 78th-minute penalty. Novo, however, came on at that point and pounced on keeper Tony Bullock's parry to fire the killer third after 85 minutes.
