The Government has opened up so many areas for building purposes that it is difficult to fathom how speculators have decided to spoil the environs of our quaint Lija village core.
Transfiguration Avenue is the main road which leads from the parish church to Naxxar Road and is the only wide road which allows people to have a quiet stroll in summer or to play bowls or tennis in the available spaces.
Much of this will change now that another developer wants to demolish part of an existing villa to build no fewer than eight flats, a penthouse and a basement garage.
If PA 05850/06 is approved by MEPA it will contribute to the destruction of this avenue, besides residents having to bear heavy machinery and dust for many months.
A further application by a developer a few metres up the road is also being objected to.
It must also be pointed out that this area lies on a huge water reservoir which is still very much in use as government bowsers are often seen filling up their tanks.
Lija council should be the first to object to the planned changes to this avenue unless it wants us to become another Swieqi with cranes and other heavy equipment destroying the little bit of beauty that is left in our village.
