Last Friday week, students, teachers, Old Edwardians, board members and college friends participated in three main activities to celebrate the feast of St Edward, King and Confessor (1004-1066), patron saint of St Edward's College in Vittoriosa.
During the General School Assembly, the headmaster, Anthony Saliba, introduced Fr Joe Zammit, OSA, as the new college chaplain. He also thanked Fr Alfred Micallef for serving as chaplain for many years and presented him with a book-gift on his retirement from college.
After prayers, the Junior School pupils made their way to the enchanting chapel, where Mgr George Mifsud Montanaro, an Old Edwardian, led the congregation during a thanksgiving Mass and also prayed for the repose of the soul of Francis Berry, a former teacher of English and English Literature (1942-1946), who had passed away a few days earlier at the age of 93.
Middle and Senior School students attended Mass in the main hall, celebrated by Fr Claude Portelli, an Old Edwardian who is now carrying out his pastoral ministry in St Julian's parish.
The rest of the morning brought to College Old Edwardians to participate in a sports festival, which included football, basketball, volleyball, rugby, special activities for Year 3 pupils as well as Inter-House tournaments for Year 7 and Year 8 students.
The Sports Festival came to a close with the presentation of the 'Laferla Shield' to Dr Daniel Aquilina on behalf of all the Old Edwardians for their great support and active participation in all the activities held in honour of St Edward. At the end, the Old Edwardians Association held refreshments for its members and college staff.
