The Chartered Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is based in the UK and is perhaps the world's leading professional body for occupational health and safety. There are many Maltese health and safety practitioners who have achieved membership status with IOSH, and this is a tribute to their professionalism and training.
The significance of IOSH cannot be overstated, and one has only to examine its key aims, and indeed its achievements, to understand its importance in the field of occupational safety and health.
IOSH, for example, regulates and steers the profession, maintaining standards and providing impartial, authoritative guidance on health and safety issues. It provides government, enforcements agencies and others with advice on proposed legislation and guidance and aims to ensure that its members have a strong and effective voice which influences health and safety related issues with governments, trades unions, and employers.
It also aims to increase its contribution within the European Union and explore ways in which it can more directly influence European Directives and guidance. IOSH is therefore a key player in the drive towards higher standards of health and safety in European workplaces. chudson@ihs.com.mt.
