Ray Bondin, executive coordinator of the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee, delivered a talk on Cities, Development And Heritage during a meeting in Naples on the occasion of the United Nations World Habitat Day.
The theme of the day was Cities, Magnets Of Hope.
Dr Bondin is the president of CIVVIH, the International Committee on Historic Towns and Villages, which is one of the scientific committees of ICOMOS, the International Council of Monuments and Sites.
His speech concentrated on how a balance can be found between development and the protection of heritage, which, in turn, can lead to job creation for locals. Many of the problems facing modern and historic cities, Dr Bondin argued, can be solved only by participative management systems.
This is the second time he has been invited to address a UN habitat meeting.
