Bestselling author and mathematician Ian Stewart is currently giving a series of public talks in Malta. Stewart is a Professor of Mathematics at Warwick University. He was awarded the 1998 Communications Award of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics in the US for popularising mathematical and scientific topics through books such as Does God Play Dice?, From Here To Infinity, The Collapse Of Chaos and The Science Of Discworld.
Yesterday, he spoke to Fifth Form students, on Why Do Mathematics? Is There Any Point, Now That We Have Calculators And Computers? His entertaining and informative style was well-received by his young audience, gathered at the University of Malta.
On Wednesday, he will be giving a public lecture for the Malta Mathematical Society on All The World's A Network. This one-hour talk will be highly illustrated and will avoid mathematical technicalities. It will describe exciting developments in the dynamics of networks, which are pervasive in today's science. The talk will be held at St James Cavalier in Valletta at 6.30 p.m. and is being sponsored by Agenda Bookshop and the Malta Council for Science and Technology.
On October 30, he will speak to Junior College and Sixth Form students on Probability Puzzles And Paradoxes. This talk will be held at the Junior College at 2 p.m.
