The secretary of Union Haddiema Maghqudin's port, transport and aviation section, Antoine Azzopardi, died yesterday, aged 44.
Mr Azzopardi had been section secretary since March and previously he had served as assistant secretary of the same section.
He had been a member of the UHM's general council and before becoming a union full timer, he had been shop steward and a committee member of the UHM's Freeport group.
He was the union's representative at the Occupational Health and Safety Authority and on the Building Industry Consultative Council. He also represented the union in many fora both in Malta and abroad.
The UHM said it has not just lost a colleague but also a true friend. He was a trade unionist who believed in the workers.
The union expressed solidarity with Mr Azzopardi's wife, Therese, their children Nathan and David, his parents, his siblings, friends and other relatives.
The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions council and its affiliates expressed sorrow at Mr Azzopardi's loss.
