The first of the eight cultural guided tours organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture will focus on the Second World War, visiting war museums and shelters on Sunday.

On the itinerary is National War Museum at Fort St Elmo, Valletta which displays historic relics such as the George Cross.

The tour will also pay a visit to two of Malta's war shelters, one of which is beneath the parish church of St Augustine in Old Bakery Street, Valletta and the other one situated in Mgarr under Il-Barri restaurant.

The former consists of three rock-hewn cubicles and a larger tunnel or gallery that served as a chapel while the latter served as a home, a temple and a refuge for the people of Mgarr during the war. It's one of the largest underground locations of its kind in Malta.

The tour will also take in the Malta Aviation Museum at Ta' Qali which exhibits aircraft, artefacts and documents of cultural and historical value. Transport will leave from Floriana and Sliema at 8.45 a.m. The price of block tickets for the seven tours excluding the Gozo tour is Lm27 for adults and Lm20 for senior citizens and children. For those wishing to pay for each tour separately, the ticket costs is Lm4.50 for adults and Lm3.50 for senior citizens and children.

Booking together with payments can be made at the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, 230, Republic Street, Valletta by Thursday.
