The Ramblers' Association is still attracting many people to its walks, if the new series that started on Sunday, October 8, is anything to go by.

That walk had a historical theme, taking in Notre Dame Gate, San Salvatore fortifications, in Vittoriosa, through Capuchins Gate, on to Castile Place then along the fortifications on the Kalkara side, past Santa Scolastica monastery, the first hospital of the Order of the Knights of St John, through Sally Port - the landing place of the Piccolo Soccorso during the Great Siege, and then on to Fort St Angelo.

Ramblers' Association president Lino Bugeja said the backing of the public was most encouraging.

"With every walk we are not only seeing more and more ramblers but also what a great longing there is among the public not only to enjoy open spaces but to get to know more about the country's history," Mr Bugeja said.

The next walk to be held by the association is scheduled for October 25 and will take trekkers to Gozo.

On that walk, the ramblers will leave Mgarr Harbour and proceed via the clay slopes under Fort Chambray on to Ix-Xatt l-Ahmar and the seaward cliffs to Mgarr ix-Xini tower. The way back will be via Ghajnsielem, Lourdes church and its belvedere. It is an easy to moderate walk, with some gradients. Participants pay their own ferry fare.

The duration will be about six hours and the meeting place at 9 a.m. will be the Cirkewwa bus terminus (bus 45 or145).
