The majority of the roads in Madliena are narrow and winding, with many blind corners where two cars cannot pass. They are dusty and in a very bad state and have remained like that since they were formed many years ago when Madliena was a small hamlet with a few farmers living here. Now Madliena is a large village with quite a big number of residents.
To make matters worse, the Swieqi council, which is responsible for Madliena, has put up many "road bumps", some of them hardly 10 metres apart. From my house to Ta' L-Ibrag church, a distance of about one kilometre, there are 14 such bumps.
These bumps are a real nuisance to drivers and a waste of money. It is indeed a dangerous and harrowing experience to drive along these roads especially with so many heavy trucks and cranes on many building sites.
At last the government is currently embarking on an important scheme to upgrade residential roads of Malta's towns and villages, including Madliena. Putting just a layer of tarmac is, of course, not acceptable. Half measures are always a waste of money.
It is hoped and rightly assumed that these roads will be widened, made up with proper foundations and pavements, before tarmac is laid. This is not difficult as many of these roads are still bordered by fields and wasteland on both sides.
The area of Madliena is fairly large and has always been neglected. As far as I know there is not one single post-box. Is it too much to ask the council and Maltapost to put up a few post-boxes around the village?
