Dr Charles Galdies, programme manager of the Malta-based International Ocean Institute (IOI), has developed and co-ordinated a training course on the use of remote sensing and geographical information system for coastal and ocean management.

This was a joint event together with the IOC/UNESCO IODE (Intergovernmental Ocean Data Exchange) Project Office in Ostend, Belgium, where the course was held from September 18 to 24. It was attended by 17 participants from developing countries.

Dr Galdies provided lectures on the use of remote sensing and geographical information system for ocean governance, on data formats and sources, and on numerical data processing. He also demonstrated case studies related to the theme of this course.

Four IOI alumni were provided with IOI scholarships to attend the specialised training as a follow-up to their training on Regional Ocean Governance that is conducted in Malta every year by IOI through its Malta Operational Centre.

Further information on the IOI and its activities is available at www.ioinst.org. Anyone interested to receive updated information on IOI activities is invited to register in this Website.
