The Caravaggio Foundation and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts plan to mark the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio's presence on the island through a number of coordinated events and initiatives next year and the year after to be promoted under the name Caravaggio 400 Malta.
Caravaggio's arrived here from Naples in mid-June 1607 and remained until his dramatic escape in October 1608. This period provided the artist with his only long and real moment of tranquillity, when he could reflect on both his life and his work.
In Malta, he was made Knight of Magistral Obedience in July 1608.
The commemoration activities, details of which are expected to be published next month, will include a number of events and initiatives roping in the involvement of local and international entities and institutions.
Events promoted by third parties will be welcomed.
A joint committee will be set up to oversee and coordinate all initiatives.
