William Chetcuti yesterday shifted from his favourite Double Trap to Trap and was an instant success after firing the best score over the 75-clay event at the Bidnija ranges.

During competition, he shot 44 points and was second at that stage behind Class A trio Justin Attard, Ryan Bugeja and Jeffrey Pisani who all targeted 45 clays.

However, Chetcuti had the best score in the barrage with a 21 for an overall 65 to claim the Victoria Aluminium Trophy.

The runner-up was Nicky Carabott, 63 clays, and Attard had to settle for third place on 62.

Trap result: 1. W. Chetcuti 44+21 (65); 2. N. Carabott 43+20 (63); 3. J. Attard 45+17 (62); 4. R. Bugeja 45+16 (61); 5. A. Bugeja 44+16 (60); 6. J. Pisani 45+10(55).

Also yesterday, the federation held competitions for air weapons at the Larry Vella Shooting Hall.

The Air Rifle event was won by William Vella with 567 points. Charlo Chircop was second with 499. Ray Cacciattolo was the top shooter in Air Pistol with 543 points.

Larry Vella memorial

On Wednesday, a memorial will be held to commemorate former Malta Olympian Larry Vella who passed away 10 years ago.

Mass will be said by Fr Hilary Tagliaferro at Bidnija at 7 p.m.

Vella represented Malta in the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
