BMW 3 Series Coupé, Z4 launched

A typical BMW, but a very special BMW 3 Series and a unique car. With this truly outstanding two-door athlete, BMW is continuing a long tradition and, at the same time, setting entirely new standards within a highly interesting market segment. Alongside the coupé, local agents Muscats Motors launched the BMW Z4 3.0si and M Coupé during an event at the Royal Malta Golf Club last month.
Following the saloon and touring (estate) models, this is the third time that the BMW 3 Series is being supplemented by a coupé. This time however the 3 Series Coupé is even more different and more unique than ever before.
On first sight the individual characteristics are clearly recognisable. They are new in every detail and exude a feeling of power and dynamism. The overall look is full of sophisticated style and elegance.
The new coupé offers unique standards within the engine compartment, where BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six with twin turbo technology, high-precision injection and an all-aluminium crankcase is making its debut.
This 306 hp high-performance power unit gives the BMW 335i Coupé outstanding performance, combined with impressive fuel economy. No fewer than two other petrol engines as well as two diesel power units are available for the BMW 3 Series Coupé right from the introduction of the new car.
Rear-wheel drive, optimised weight, harmonious axle load distribution and the most sophisticated suspension are further essential factors guaranteeing a truly fascinating driving experience. At the same time the new 3 Series Coupé offers a standard of agility and driving dynamics quite unique in its class.
Through its handling and superior performance (not just on the top model), the 3 Series Coupé simply begs the driver to show an active style of motoring, and in the process the new coupé combines its sporting character with stylish looks.
Also offering a wide range of safety and comfort features, the BMW 3 Series Coupé makes even the shortest trip an outstanding experience in pleasure. Numerous customisation options give the driver the opportunity to tailor his or her car to their personal wishes. The BMW 3 Series Coupé is available with a large number of high-tech solutions for audio, navigation and telematics - features originally developed strictly for the luxury cars now making their way into this segment. This clearly underlines the exclusive character of the new BMW 3 Series Coupé.
"The new BMW Z4 Coupé is best described as a Pocket GT," Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Brand Design, said at the international launch. "The Z4 Coupé should be considered as a fully fledged GT car that has been shrink-wrapped around two people.
"It represents the smallest possible package that can accommodate the occupants and enough luggage for a long journey while still retaining the strong, muscular stance of the cutting-edge Z4 Roadster."
The 2006 Z4 Coupé has undergone its first major evolution. Heading an extensive list of updates and improvements are the all-new, more powerful engines; six-speed manual and automatic transmissions available on all models; more powerful brakes, standard 17-inch wheels and tyres across the board, and a more advanced Dynamic Stability Control system.
Along with all this driving-oriented progress, design and materials refinements inside and out enhance both aesthetics and function.
BMW Motorsport's Z4 M Coupé takes the pocket GT design and adds a distinctive sporting edge. A lower front valance with large air intakes dominates the frontal view. The power bulge in the bonnet, created by two sharp front-to-rear crease lines, also highlights the potential of the high-performance M variant.
From the rear, similar high performance traits are exhibited. BMW M's trademark four exhaust tailpipes protrude from an aerodynamic rear diffuser that ensures the car stays firmly planted on the road.
Drivers now have the choice of the lightest production six-cylinder engine in the world powering their coupé, or the seven-time International Engine of the Year category-winning BMW Motorsport powerplant - a focused, high-performance model line-up that will wet the appetites of any motoring enthusiasts.
The new BMW Z4 is sure to have a wide emotional appeal for both sports car and BMW fans. It is said that most cars in the sporting coupé sector try to be a jacks of all trades... and end up being the master of none.
However, the Z4 Coupé is different - it is a focused sports car aimed fairly and squarely at drivers who simply love driving. It is an unashamed performance car as much on the track as it is on the road.
