The Malta Labour Party has won a majority on the seven-member executive committee of the Local Councils Association in the election held yesterday in which all local councillors were entitled to vote. The Nationalist Party, which previously had a majority, won three seats.

Michael Cohen, Labour mayor of Kalkara, is set to replace Dr Ian Micallef (PN, Gzira) as president of the committee during its first meeting, though Dr Micallef is still on the committee.

The other members are: Frederick Cutajar (Labour mayor of Santa Lucija); Maria Natoli (Labour councillor at Nadur); Claudette Abela Baldacchino (MLP deputy mayor of Qrendi); Doris Borg (Nationalist deputy mayor, Birkirkara); and Noel Formosa (Nationalist mayor of San Lawrenz, Gozo).

However, the Nationalist Party won two out of the three regional representatives. Doris Borg was elected regional representative, Malta North-West, and Noel Formosa was elected regional representative, Gozo. Claudette Abela Baldacchino was elected regional representative Malta South-East.
