Obituary

ATTARD. On October 5, at the Gozo General Hospital, MICHAEL, of Xewkija, aged 79, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Maria, his only daughter Jane and her husband Keith Cilia Debono, his grandchildren Michael and Emma, his brothers and sisters, in-laws, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Gozo General Hospital today at 5 p.m. for St John the Baptist parish church, Xewkija, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 5.30 p.m. followed by interment in the family vault at Xewkija cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siggiewi will be appreciated. God grant him eternal rest.

Lecture On Rural Settlement

A lecture on rural settlement in England will be delivered at the Junior Common Room, University of Malta on October 17 at 6 p.m.

Brian Roberts will talk about landscapes as a source of historical evidence. In a study entitled Landscapes, Documents And Maps: Village Plans In Northern England And Beyond, to be published later this year, his explorations extend beyond geography into history, archaeology, architecture and place-name studies.

US Visas

As from November 1, persons applying for a visa to travel to the United States must use an electronic visa application form since regular paper applications will not be accepted. Applicants must fill the form electronically on the website and print it. Once it is completely filled out, applicants must pay the visa application fee at any BOV branch and bring the printed electronic form, required photo and receipt of payment to the US Embassy during visa application hours. The required photo must measure 5 cm by 5 cm.

Forms can be accessed by logging onto http://malta.usembassy.gov.

Grand Prix Screening

The Japanese Grand Prix race, being held in Suzuka, will be shown at the Pinto Marina, opposite outlets located along the Valletta Waterfront, tomorrow at 7 a.m.

Alternatively, visitors to the Pinto Marina can also enjoy lunch or visit the shops at the Waterfront while the race is on.

US Embassy Closed

The American Embassy will be closed on Monday for Columbus Day, an American national holiday.

The Embassy will resume normal business hours on Tuesday.

Understanding The Euro

Converging To Euro: Understanding The Practical And Technical Aspects is the theme for a programme of seminars being organised by the Institute of Financial Services (IFS-Malta) in collaboration with the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).

They will be held every Thursday on three consecutive weeks, commencing on October 12 at the MFSA.

Participants will be given an overview of Economic and Monetary Union and details linked to the adoption of the euro in Malta.

The seminars will feature a blend of experts hailing from academia, the regulatory side and practitioners who shall be sharing their experience.

Vocal Recital

Soprano Marita Bezzina will give a vocal recital accompanied by pianist Ramona Zammit Formosa in the Sacristy Hall at the Valletta Waterfront on Monday at 4 p.m.

Ms Bezzina will sing different interpretations of Ave Maria, including versions by Schubert, Mizzi and Mascagni. She will also perform O Divine Redeemer by Gonoud, The Lord's Prayer by Malotte, Largo by Handel, Ave Verum by Mozart, Pieta` Signore by Stradella and Holy City by Adams.

The recital will last 45 minutes and refreshments will be offered at the end. Tickets are at Lm4 and are available from the door prior to the start of the recital or by phoning on 7968 0852.

Tournament Raises Funds

The British High Commission recently teamed up with Razzett Tal-Hbiberija to host a charity five-a-side football tournament to raise funds and support the recreational therapies and educational activities that the Razzett provides for people with disabilities.

Other teams participating included Air Malta, Bank of Valletta, De La Rue, Maltapost, Melita Cable, Miller Distributors, Salvo Grima Group, Thomas Smith, Vodafone and the Austrian Embassy.

The tournament raised over Lm1,000 in donations.

Astronomy Evening

An Astronomy evening dedicated to the sun will be organised by the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAA) at Stella Maris College, Gzira on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The evening will feature an exhibition, the official launch of the IAA logo and website as well as three short talks. The talks will discuss qualitative analysis of sunspots, imaging and the experience of observing the sun.

The public is invited to attend. Entrance is free of charge.

Air Crash Commemoration

A church service, including Holy Mass, will be held at the British Military Cemetery in Pembroke on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The service is to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the air crash in which 15 Maltese soldiers, then serving in the British Army's Royal Engineers Corps, lost their lives in North Africa while returning to Malta.

Friends, relatives and ex-colleagues are asked to attend.

Children's Commissioner

The Commissioner for Children has moved to a new office at 469, St Joseph High Road, Santa Venera HMR 18.

Road Closed

Birkirkara Road in St Julians will be closed to traffic on October 14 between 8.30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Bus Route number 42 will operate via Reggie Miller Street, Gzira.

Aid For Ill Child

A fund raising activity weekend at the Chameleon Hall, Corinthia Palace Hotel will take place on October 14 and 15 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., in aid of Beyond the Moon, an international charitable association that aids seriously ill children.

There will be stalls with items including plants, books, toys, homemade cakes and preserves as well as various displays including martial arts and the Pippa Gee Wheelchair dancing.

Money collected from these funds will also go towards buying a Christmas present for a Maltese child suffering from a life-threatening disease.

Beyond the Moon is a Belgium-based charity which has been adopted by Corinthia Hotels as its Community Partner throughout its hotels in 11 destinations.

Baroque Architecture

A course entitled Understanding Baroque Architecture will be conducted at Din L-Art Helwa, 133 Melita Street, Valletta on October 25 between 9 a.m. and 12.15 p.m.

The course, which will be led by Prof. Denis De Lucca, will provide participants with a picture of architectural developments in 17th and 18th century Europe, with a focus on Italy and Malta as well as the role of the Roman art school.

The fee for the course is Lm8 including a coffee break. Everyone is welcome to attend. However, places are limited to 25 persons. For registrations, the public may contact Din L-Art Helwa on 2122 5952.

Public Speaking

An introductory session on public speaking and communication skills is to be held at St James Cavalier, Valletta on October 28 between 9.30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Choir Performance

The St Monica Choir of Mosta will perform at the Culture Performance Hall of the Sliema Philharmonic Society on October 20 at 7.30 p.m.

The concert, which forms part of the Sliema International Arts Festival, will be followed by the inauguration of an exhibition of marble works by sculptor Ronnie Pisani.

The choir, conducted by Sister Beniamina Portelli of the Augustinian Sisters, will sing songs including Just Another Rumba by George Gershwin, Circle of Life from the movie The Lion King, John Lennon's Imagine and Gerry and the Pacemaker's You'll Never Walk Along among others.

Entrance is free. Patrons are asked to be seated by 7.20 p.m.

Bank Competition

George Bezzina from Marsascala, Karl Brincat Peplow from Mosta, Claire Grech from St Paul's Bay, Graziella Naudi from Ibragg, Maria Scicluna from Zejtun and Christine Mizzi from Marsalforn have won a home theatre system after taking part in the APS Bank website competition launched during the Malta International Trade Fair.

World Post Day

Malta will join the World Post Day celebrations together with all postal administrations affiliated to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on Monday.

This year's theme is The Post - Reaching Everyone Everywhere. Earning Customers' Trust With Total Quality Worldwide.

Malta joined the UPU on July 1, 1875, shortly after it was set up.

Lottery Winner Refunded

Airline pilot Karl Frendo Cumbo got back the money he paid for a bathroom set and accessories when he won the Win Your Money Back campaign organised by Banju Boutique for the months of June/August.

The lottery was for people who bought bathrooms, tiles, and accessories from Banju Boutique.
