The General Workers' Union has requested an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss what it describes as "the crisis in the tourism industry".

In a letter to Dr Gonzi, the GWU expressed its concern about the fact that the number of tourist arrivals last August dipped by 7.9 per cent when compared to the same month last year.

This, the union, said, was of great concern to the workers employed in the industry.

More preoccupying was the fact that in its various contacts with hotel managements, the union was getting the impression that the coming winter would still be worse than the winter of last year.

The GWU added that another problem was the granting of catering tenders, which the union claimed was being carried out on the basis of price instead of quality and the principle of value for money.
