A 71-year-old man has been given a two-year jail term suspended for four years for defiling his 13-year-old godson three years ago.

The man admitted to defiling the teenager and offending public morals on and before December 2003.

After hearing the man's guilty plea, Magistrate Saviour Demicoli noted that his criminal record was clean, except for minor traffic offences.

The magistrate also noted that the elderly man's health was in a bad state and that he was sorry for his actions.

He handed down a suspended jail term and fined the man Lm50.

The name of the man is not being published by court order, to protect the identity of the minor.

Police Inspector Louise Calleja prosecuted.
