As a Maltese citizen living in Luxembourg, I would like to point out the inconvenience of travelling back home from here.
Currently there is only one direct flight to Mata from Luxembourg, which departs once a week on Sundays. This is with Luxair, however they stop operating in November and they are also very expensive. There is a large community of Maltese citizens now working in Luxembourg, over a hundred. The problem we face is that it is so hard to get to our own country from here. Other nationalities often fly home for the weekend simply because it is so cheap for them to do so.
We were all overjoyed to hear that Ryanair will start operating to and from Malta as from October. Eagerly, many of us checked whether we could find a good connection from Frankfurt-Hahn (which is approximately an hour away from Luxembourg), since Ryanair depart from there to Pisa. Unfortunately, the return flights would include an overnight stay in Pisa.
Air Malta operate daily flights to Brussels. Many Maltese opt to catch a three-hour train-ride to Brussels and then fly with Air Malta from there. We often wonder why there are no direct flights to Luxembourg with Air Malta. Is it not possible for the airline to start operating double-destination flights Malta-Brussels-Luxembourg-Malta? This could very easily be done and I am sure that their flights will be filled that way, what with us travelling back to Malta and family members coming to visit, along with businessmen and ministers who very often attend conferences in Luxembourg. I hope that this plea will be taken into consideration so that we won't feel stranded anymore!
