The government is planning to build a rehabilitation centre in the grounds of St Vincent de Paul Home for the Elderly to provide long-term care and rehabilitation for elderly persons on the Zammit Clapp home model, Helen D'Amato, Parliamentary Secretary for the Care of the Elderly and Community Care, said.

The centre would accommodate 280 patients, he said.

Ms D'Amato was speaking before she presented Anthony Scerri, a nurse at Zammit Clapp home for the elderly, with the Zammit Clapp Worker of the Year award instituted by the Ministry of Health, the Elderly and Community Care on Friday. In all there were five nominations.

Ms D'Amato, who referred to statistics showing an increasing number of elderly persons, said that one of the secrets of Zammit Clapp lay in the professionalism of its staff.

Mr Scerri graduated as a nurse in 1997 and started working at Zammit Clapp in September of that year.
