The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) has concluded a sponsorship agreement with Melita Cable which has announced it will sponsor the Sports Journalism category in the 16th annual Malta Journalism Awards next month.

The finalist in this category this year is Charles Camenzuli of Net TV.

Twenty-six other finalists were announced last Wednesday; 55 journalists submitted entries.

Awards will be presented to the winners of 12 categories this year, three of which are new: Print Journalism (News), Print Journalism (Features), Photographic Journalism, Broadcast Journalism (TV Script), Broadcast Journalism (TV Film), E-Journalism, Sports Journalism, Cultural Journalism, and Maltese Language in Journalism.

The three new categories are Broadcast Journalism (Radio), Overseas Assignments, and Sports Photography.

The judges may decide not to declare a winner in a particular category if the required standard has not been reached, even if there is only one finalist in that category.

Eight journalists and photographers who work for or who have published in The Times and The Sunday Times have been named finalists this year.

Lino Bugeja (The Times, The Sunday Times) has been named a finalist in the Print Journalism (News) category, sponsored by HSBC Bank Malta plc, and the Cultural Journalism category, sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority.

Martin Debattista (The Times) and Vanessa Macdonald (The Times/The Sunday Times) are finalists in the Print Journalism (Features) category sponsored by Vodafone Malta Ltd. Freelance photographer Renè Rossignaud (The Times), Christian Sant Fournier (The Times) and Darrin Zammit Lupi (The Times) are finalists in their category sponsored by The Farsons Foundation.

The winner of the Maltese Language in Journalism award and the Gold Award for outstanding contribution to journalism will be announced on the night.

Other organisations sponsoring awards include the Broadcasting Authority, HP (Hewlett-Packard), Malta International Airport, and Emirates Airlines.
