• Iraq's parliament took tentative steps to resolve a deadlock over autonomous regions, an issue that has split its politicians on sectarian lines, as fresh clashes erupted in southern Baghdad. Parliament named a committee to draft amendments to the constitution -a Sunni demand - and read out a bill to allow for regional autonomy, a key demand of powerful Shi'ite leaders.
• A UN commander said Israeli troops should be out of south Lebanon within days, but Israel called for an agreement with the peacekeepers on rules of engagement before a full withdrawal. Israeli forces have gradually been pulling out of territory they captured during a 34-day war with Hizbollah guerillas that ended with a truce on August 14.
• Former WorldCom Inc. Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers, convicted of orchestrating an $11 billion accounting fraud, reported to a medium-security federal prison in Louisiana to begin his 25-year sentence. Ebbers, 65, surrendered to officials at the Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, Louisiana, Bureau of Prisons spokesman Mike Truman said.
