The Labour Party has accused Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg of changing the regulations governing the Local Councils Association on the eve of the election without prior consultation.

As a result of these changes, the minister will have the discretion to choose the association's representative in international forums, such as in the Council of Europe. MLP spokesman for local councils Chris Cardona said the government had opted for this change after realising that it would be losing the majority in the association.

In the meantime, one candidate yesterday put his name forward for the election. He is San Lawrenz mayor Noel Formosa.
