The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Studies is organising an evening course in Arabic language and culture on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from the first week of October till the last week of May.

The linguistic component of the course aims at presenting the basic notions of both the modern standard and colloquial varieties of Arabic. Apart from tackling conversation drills, students are also exposed to authentic Arabic documentation, including audio-visual materials from Arab satellite channels and from the Arab press.

The linguistic element of the course is presented against the backdrop of a number of sessions covering Arab history, civilisation and culture. Particular emphasis is given to the Arab way of life, preparing the students to interact correctly within the Arab reality. This course targets persons who come in contact with Arabs, with special attention given to the spheres of diplomacy and business.

The tutor and co-ordinator of the course is Dr Martin Zammit, senior lecturer and co-ordinator of the Arabic programme at the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Studies.

For more information on the course call Isabelle Fenech, Room 315, Old Humanities Building on 2340-2337, e-mail: isabelle.fenech@um.edu.mt or visit http://home.um.edu.mt/arnes/ langcult_course.pdf.
