Casa Leone staff leave GWU

Nearly all 29 members of the GWU, currently working at the Casa Leone home for the elderly, have resigned and asked former GWU section secretary Karmenu Vella to help them set up a new trade union.

Mr Vella, former secretary of the GWU's Services and Media Section, resigned from the union on September 1.

The workers handed in their resignations to GWU general secretary Tony Zarb; GWU deputy general secretary Michael Parnis, who is temporarily heading the section; and Noel Vella, GWU's director of labour and industrial relations.

Mr Vella has drawn up a draft statute for the new union, which has been handed in to Dr Vella.

The workers said they were confident that with the support of Mr Vella, and others, they would be able to register their trade union shortly.
