The five-a-side Jubilee Mini-Pitch in the Qala's Family Garden was recently inaugurated. The project was completed by the local council with the collaboration of UEFA, the Malta Football Association, the Gozo Ministry and St Joseph FC committee.
Minister Giovanna Debono, Speaker Anton Tabone and various members of Gozitan sport, social and cultural committees were present at the inauguration.
Qala mayor Paul Buttigieg thanked UEFA and the MFA for their initiative, pointing out that since UEFA was set up 50 years ago, it has sponsored various mini-pitches around Malta and Gozo. He also highlighted the importance for younger generations to take up a sports discipline.
The money spent on sports facilities was an investment in children, students and youngsters, he said, thanking all those who contributed towards the setting up of the new mini-pitch in Qala.
Mrs Debono also had words of praise for various committees which had worked to set up synthetic mini-pitches around Gozo. She emphasised the importance for both children and adults to practise a sport, especially considering the high incidence of obesity among our children as a recent international survey had revealed.
At the end of the evening Mrs Debono unveiled a commemorative plaque. Vice parish priest Fr Charles Buttigieg blessed the plaque and the new pitch.
A delegation, led by MFA president Joe Mifsud, watched the Qala Youth Nursery during a training session.
The delegation was made up of UEFA executive head Muhammed Ta, MFA vice-presidents Carmelo Bartolo and Ludovico Micallef, GFA president Joe Cordina, GFA secretary Elvin Grech, Gozo Youth FA Felix Apap, and Joe Sammut, the project contractor. One of the children presented Mr Ta with a memento.
