The ILO works closely with other multilateral organisations and civil society in support of the UN Millennium Declaration. The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) works closely with the ILO.

The recent joint conference organised by the EESC and the ILO at EESC Headquarters in Rue Belliard, with the theme 'The European Social Model', is the first step of co-operation between the two organisations.

As stated in the conference presentation, the European social model is of utmost importance. Issues like social justice, social protection, equal opportunities and minimum social and labour standards are values reflected also in the international labour standards of the ILO.

The preservation and consolidation of the European model is crucial for the promotion of socially responsible policies in other parts of the world.
