Four men were yesterday morning apprehended while hunting illegally at sea some 23 nautical miles off Marsalforn following a fast chase by the AFM Maritime Squadron personnel who were on patrol, the army said.

The men, onboard a 150-horsepower speedboat, fled the scene as soon as they were spotted by the AFM's fast boat, P-01, when they were still about 9.4 nautical miles off Gozo.

On board the speedboat, the AFM personnel from the 2nd Regiment's Rapid Deployment Team found several shotguns, a harpoon, and ammunition in containers - with some being illegal, CD-playing equipment with bird calls, and other hunting related equipment.

The confiscated speedboat has been taken to the Maritime Squadron base in Haywharf, while the detained men, age between 21 and 31 years and the hunting equipment were handed over to the Administrative Law Enforcement (ALE) members for further investigation.
