A 36-year-old man was yesterday charged with defiling his girlfriend's 15-year-old sister over the past nine months. The man, of Paola, pleaded not guilty to defiling the minor between December 2005 and September 2006.

Lawyer Malcolm Mifsud, for the man, asked the court to order a ban on publication of his client's name.

Dr Mifsud said his client was presumed to be innocent at this stage and publishing his name in the media could have negative repercussions on his job.

The lawyer claimed that his client had been provoked by the girl.

Police Inspectors Anthony Cassar and Raymond Aquilina objected to the lawyer's request.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi upheld the request for a ban on publication but turned down a request for bail.
