The second SKSM Karate Championships for 2006 were held at Mosta last weekend. This one-day event was organised by the club's sub-committee and headed by Chris Galea (Head of SKSM Karate Malta).

With around 85 entrants competing in 17 different categories and featuring the participation of other local karate clubs, these championships will go down as another success for the SKSM. The championships comprised competitions for children, juniors, seniors and teams in both traditional, weapons and freestyle Kata (combination of techniques performed by the athletes in front of the judges where points are awarded for perfection, coordination, balance, speed and agility) and kumite (sparring).

In the meantime, 17 SKSM athletes are now undergoing intense training ahead of their participation in the International Karate Championships in London next month.

Very good results were obtained in this event last year with SKSM Karate Malta winning seven gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals and finishing third among 15 nations.

Over the next months, SKSM will be involved in other competitions in Romania and Germany.

In March next year, SKSM will be organising the fourth edition of the Malta International Open which is sure to be contested by athletes from 10 different countries.
